Dear Friend of ArtsBuild,
“Small axe fall big tree.” — Jamaican Proverb
This powerful proverb reminds us that even small, steady efforts—when united in purpose—can bring down the tallest obstacles. In this moment of uncertainty for the arts, it speaks directly to our collective strength.
Across the country, the arts are facing rising political pressures, reduced funding, and increased censorship. These challenges threaten not only the organizations and individuals who create, teach, and inspire—but also the values we hold dear: freedom of expression, cultural understanding, and community connection.
Yet here in Chattanooga, we know the arts are more than just performances or exhibitions. They are a vital force for innovation and creativity. They help us explore our identities, examine our country’s complex history, and imagine a more inclusive, equitable future. The arts teach us to listen, to question, and to hope. They are aspirational by nature—constantly urging us to dream bigger and reach farther, together.
At ArtsBuild, we see that spirit every day. We see it in the classrooms where young people are discovering their creative voice. We see it in the artists using their work to challenge and connect. We see it in the programs—like the Holmberg Arts Leadership Institute, Opportunity Fellows, and Periscope—that are growing a new generation of cultural leaders.
Despite the challenges, we remain hopeful—because we know the power of a community that believes in the arts. Thanks to your support, we continue to invest in the people and projects that keep Chattanooga vibrant, inclusive, and visionary.
Together, we are the small axe. And together, we are shaping a stronger, more creative future.
With deep gratitude,
James McKissic
President, ArtsBuild
