DONOR PROFILE

Stacy Lightfoot is the new Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Engagement at UTC. She is also an ArtsBuild donor and has these thoughts to share about why she supports the arts:
Why do you feel it’s important to give back to the arts?
I have a deep appreciation for how the arts unite and heal communities. The arts bring cultures and worlds together. They help us talk and walk through life with varied perspectives and they evoke innovation and creativity. The artist in me was cultivated at a young age and I know how important it is to fund ArtsBuild so that the arts are an important bedrock in our community.
What inspires you about the arts in our community?
This is the community that ignited my passion for the arts starting at a young age. I went to music and dance performances, visited museums, played instruments, and took theater and visual arts classes throughout my K–12 experiences. I now know how much of that was made possible through partnerships between schools and local arts organizations.
You’ve been a volunteer for some of our local arts organizations. What are the biggest contributions you see for the work of these organizations? The biggest challenges?
Chattanooga has a multitude of arts organizations and supporters. I’m proud to be one of them. It speaks to the desire and need to continue the great work that’s happening in our community around arts and arts education.
A challenge for the arts is funding. Some people don’t see the value in supporting arts because to some the impact is hard to measure. I would argue a key indicator of a vibrant and thriving community is the strength of the arts in that community.
