Mystery is the heart of all narrative, its pulse is the fine tension between question and perception, wonder and suspense.
For the purposes of this workshop our prose need not hinge on a crime, a culprit, or a private eye. We’ll build inquiry into fictional ecosystems and discuss how the mechanics of mystery (the structural and craft-oriented choices) can haunt, provoke, or fuse our prose. This class will benefit participants who have a vision for a project, but don’t know where to begin, as well as those who have a work or works in progress. The goal is to find the heart of the mystery in your project and deepen, develop, or pursue it—or to begin from a question or an inquiry and allow a world to blossom around it. Together, we’ll investigate different strategies for enhancing mystery, such as the uncanny coincidence, incongruous details, and repetition. We’ll analyze excerpts from mysterious works that demonstrate these techniques. We’ll generate new work modeled on these examples.

Chattanooga’s renowned British Style Brass Band, Jericho Brass, and the superb Chattanooga Clarinet Choir, will perform a wide range of songs and melodies that have been long time audience favorites and which highlight the superior musicianship of the members of both groups. They will perform separately and collectively. Both groups of musicians are comprised of auditioned musicians who are experts on their respective instruments, and together provide a combined musical resonance that will delight any audience in attendance.
Both groups have performing concerts in Chattanooga (and internationally as well) since 1998. The CLARINET CHOIR was formed by Jay Craven, a clarinetist who played with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra. Clarinets such as the Eb and Bb clarinets and larger clarinets including the unique Contra-Alto Bass Clarinet instruments are played by the 20+ members of the group.
The JERICHO BRASS BAND was formed by several brass band musicians who played British Style Brass Instruments. Brass Band instruments include the cornet (instead of trumpets), various British style horns, euphoniums, trombones and upright Bass (Tuba-like).
Musicians of both groups include both professionals, semi-professionals and music instructors in various Chattanooga middle and high schools. A few are (or have been) members of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra. Both Nicholas Hartline, director of the CHATTANOOGA CLARINET CHOIR, and David Butler, director of the JERICHO BRASS BAND, are expert, long term musicians in the Chattanooga music scene.
A variety of different music styles will be performed, including Marches (by John Phillip Sousa), contemporary tonal music, and the feature event will be from the universally known composer, Dimitri Shostakovich, called “Festive Overture”.
This event is free, and no RSVP is needed! Donations will be accepted.

The event returns to East Side Elementary School on April 24, 2026, from 4:00–7:00 PM, and The Pop-Up Project invite families, friends, and neighbors to join us for an afternoon full of joy, creativity, and community connection.
Expect performances from our students and Teaching Artists along with music, games, food, and community partner booths offering resources for families in English and Spanish.
Primavera matters because it turns our outreach work into a public moment: kids get a real stage, families get connected to local support, and the neighborhood gets a free, welcoming event built around joy and access.
Chattanooga Ballet’s Making Moves On Stage performance features students from its community outreach program, including participants from local Boys & Girls Clubs, the Bethlehem Center, and the Carver Community Center.
The performance highlights original choreography and the growth of young dancers across the Chattanooga community.

At ArtsBuild, we work each day to build stronger communities through the arts with our investments and focus in three main areas—arts access, arts education, and arts leadership—to grow the arts ecosystem in Chattanooga-Hamilton County. Knowing the arts are essential to our lives and the economy, we take our unique role seriously as a grant maker, hub, and advocate for the arts. With the support of many donors and partners, we can generate resources towards our vision to provide more arts in more places for more people.
