ArtsBuild Hosts Kennedy Center Workshops for Teachers

ArtsBuild, in conjunction with the Partners in Education program of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, will host workshops for local educators led by consultant Melanie Rick September 23-25, 2014. The workshops will focus on arts integration and will be held from 9 am – 4 pm at Barger Academy of Fine Arts at 4808 Brainerd Road.

2014 marks the 13th year of the partnership between ArtsBuild, the Hamilton County Department of Education (HCDE) and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Partners in Education Program. The teacher workshops are held during the school year to connect the arts to literacy instruction. The workshops include hands-on activities and model lessons with Barger Academy third grade students.

Melanie Rick is a National Board Certified Teacher, certified Reading Specialist and arts integration consultant. She designs and leads workshops, in-depth courses, and summer training institutes focused on arts integration and how to integrate visual art, poetry, and portraiture throughout the K-8 curriculum. Ms. Rick is a course leader and program consultant for the Kennedy Center’s Changing Education Through the Arts (CETA) program in Washington DC. As the CETA program consultant, she works with teaching artists to develop and evaluate workshops presented at the Kennedy Center.

There is no charge to the teachers or schools, and ArtsBuild will reimburse HCDE schools for the costs of participating teachers’ substitutes. Funding is made possible by the Tennessee General Assembly and workshops are administered in cooperation with the State of Tennessee, Tennessee Arts Commission (TAC) and the National Endowment for the Arts.
